Sight Glass Liquid Level Measurement

When it is desired to measure a liquid level with the liquid under pressure or vacuum. A visual indication of the level can be obtained when part of the vessel is constructed from transparent material or the liquid in a vessel is bypassed through a transparent tube. Gives visual indication of level through a transparent window. Sight glass matches the level of liquid in the tank.

The high contrast between water and steam allows gauges to be stacked on top of one another without concern for blind spots between gauges. The main disadvantage of this method is that it only gives level indication local to the vessel. Today however sophisticated float switches have replaced sight glasses in many such applications. As the level of liquid in the tank rises and falls the level in the sight glass also rises and falls accordingly.

Liquid level gauges are industrial meters that are used to determine the level of a liquid in a process tank. Sight glass is subject to many limitations as it is measured manually. A manual approach to measurement sight glasses have always had a number of limitations. The material used for its transparency can suffer catastrophic failure with ensuing environmental insult hazardous conditions for personnel and or fire and explosion.

Liquid level gauge calibration is used to ensure proper readings are obtained when using level gauges. Aquarian 650r reflex gauge is rated for 975psi 350psi 24 bar for steam and provides excellent visibility of liquid level light refracting grooves in the glass cause the liquid to appear black and steam to appear white. The sight glass is marked with graduations to allow the level to be measured. Thus by measuring the level in the sight glass the level of liquid in the tank is measured.

The simplest and oldest industrial level measurement device is of course the sight glass. Is a manufacturer of glass liquid level gauges and valves.
